Indoor plant care is a process of observation. Before changing products or routines, compare the plant’s current condition with its recent light, watering, root environment, temperature and pest history. This prevents one symptom from triggering several conflicting treatments.
Open or closed
Closed terrariums suit small moisture-loving plants and need careful balance. Open terrariums provide more airflow but still should not be treated like desert bowls unless light and drainage are appropriate.
- Do not mix cacti with moisture-loving plants.
- Use small slow-growing species.
- Avoid direct sun that can overheat glass.
Layering and moisture
A drainage layer does not replace the ability to remove excess water. Use a modest amount of clean substrate and add water sparingly.
- Watch condensation.
- Remove decaying leaves promptly.
- Vent if glass remains heavily fogged.
Long-term care
Prune before plants crowd the container and monitor for mould or pests. A decorative closed system is not maintenance-free.
- Use clean tools.
- Keep containers stable.
- Wash hands after handling soil.
A simple action plan
- Identify the plant by botanical name where possible.
- Record the symptom, soil condition, light and recent changes.
- Correct the most likely environmental cause first.
- Recheck new growth before making another major change.
Local water, climate, building design and product labels differ internationally. Follow local horticultural and safety guidance when using fertilizers, pesticides, electrical grow lights or humidifiers.
