Indoor plant care is a process of observation. Before changing products or routines, compare the plant’s current condition with its recent light, watering, root environment, temperature and pest history. This prevents one symptom from triggering several conflicting treatments.
Why garden soil is unsuitable
Soil dug from outdoors can compact in containers, drain unpredictably and introduce pests or pathogens. Indoor plants generally do better in formulated potting media made from lightweight organic and mineral components.
- Use a clean commercial base or a tested recipe.
- Match particle size to the plant and pot.
- Store unused mix dry and sealed.
Adjusting a mix
Plants with thick drought-tolerant roots often need more coarse mineral material, while moisture-loving plants may benefit from a mix that holds water without becoming airless. Bark, perlite, pumice and coco coir each change structure differently.
- Avoid adding a token handful without understanding the effect.
- Replace decomposed compacted mix.
- Do not use gravel as a substitute for drainage holes.
When pH matters
Most routine problems are caused by light, watering or roots rather than pH. Test only when symptoms persist despite good care, when irrigation water is unusual, or when growing a species with narrow requirements.
